Its that time again!!!

Even tho its only October, to The Saltbox Shoppe, its almost Christmas!!!!!  Yes its true……..we are in full swing production for not only our Christmas Wishes  Open House here in Kincardine  November 11th, 12th and 12th, but for  the remainder of our Chirstmas show line up!!

Its been awhile since my last update, but its been a busy busy summer! Our garden center The Plant Place celebrated 35 YEARS IN BUSINESS this summer, my grandparents Mary and Marlow would be  proud……and probably a little surprised !! My mom was constantly on  the road this spring and summer searching for the perfect annuals and perennials to stock our garden center. She takes extreme pride in hand selecting not most but all of our plant stock. We are also very fortunate to have our greenhouse “ladies” who have worked with us for so long they keep things running smooth even when we aren’t there.

You might think she gets a chance to rest a little after the garden center winds down…………but no shes on the road yet again with me doing road trips across Ontario to our wholesale customers, showing them new products and  getting a chance to see what their  stores are all about.  When we weren’t touring across Ontario to service our wholesale stores we were in production hot and heavy in between shows.  We were everyewhere from Windsor to Bracebridge, Barrie to Brights Grove, Balls Falls to just recently Bala.  The weather was a challenge either a scortcher or heavy rain but we made it thro.

This weekend  and next we are home for a change.  We are busy gathering white birch, red dog wood, rose hips and soon pine and cedar branches for out Christmas and winter arrangements.  Tomorrow we will be infusing the store with Christmas!  Trying desperately to get things done ahead for the open house since we are away at The Makers Hand in Picton Nov 4th to 6th and only home a few days before the open house starts.

This year we are excited to have new products and ideas to share at our open house…….we will have as I meantioned all sorts of Christmas arrangements, with a few different ingredients ……..fresh of course,  really funky metal garden art,  a mixture of archetectural elements, wrought iron and of course  some new Saltbox Shoppe creations!  And as usual while you browse there will be hot apple cider and fresh home made cookies to tide you over.

The next weekend we will be at Fair November at Guelph University November 17th to 20th, If you havent visited this show you should!!!! The admittance is free but the venders are awesome! This show is very tightly juried and is filled with beautiful and unique Christmas gifts as well as treats for yourself too.

We are no sooner home then gone again for the One of a Kind show Nov 24th to Dec 4th.  This show is AMAZING! If you haven’t been, then load up your friends and come on down!!! If I remember right there is almost 800 exhibitors displaying home and garden decor, designer clothing, wood working, pottery, jewlery and gourmet food!!!! It is truely a one stop Christmas shopping destination!!!!!!  Its literally got something for everyone in price ranges that fit all budgets.

Even tho I’ve done shows for 15 years now I never tire of  exploring what my fellow artisans create! I’m lucky in the way that artisans often trade with each other……makes it kinda fun!

So mark your calendars, gather your friends and don’t forget to bring your shopping lists and make a day of it!  I promise you won’t be dissapointed!!!

Cya soon!!

On the road again!

Well we are home safe and sound from a successful Ottawa show and are repacked and ready to go to Sudbury tomorrow!  I love visiting northern Ontario, the scenery is beautiful, the air is fresh and the customers are keen to see whats new and unique from last yr.  Its interesting to go to the same shows for a few years build relationships with customers who are happy to see what new creations have been developed over the last few months.

Time seems to fly reeealllly quickly this time of yr, no sooner are we back from Sudbury and we are off to Picton for the Makers Hand show.  As wonderful as it is to revisit familiar territory its nice to explore new places,  new people and a new show as well.  I have heard wonderful things about Prince Edward County and am eager to check it out.

However, after the Makers Hand we are settling in if only for a short time, for our annual Christmas Wishes Open House held right here on home turf.  My mom and I have been busy collecting great pieces for this throughout the year, as well as showing The Saltbox Shoppes work as well.  My mom has a special talent, that no matter how hard I try I can’t seem to master, she has a gift for not only making container gardening a work of art during the summer months, but makes amazing custom Christmas containers as well.  She hand picks only the freshest pine, cedar and red dogwood branches,  rosehips, and combines them with sprigs of red berries,  and other various hand selected surprises, carefully chosen.  Often she uses The Saltbox Shoppes tin containers, or your own containers as well as she is also offering  special variety of container that you will just have to come see to find out.

I think what makes our open house unique is that it is an ecclectic mix of shabby chic, Christmas in the country/trendsetting with an organic eco-friendly flair.  We try to be different, hand selecting each and every piece that we offer to you, we realize your home is an individual retreat requiring pieces that are as unique as you and your family.

So set aside some time during the weekend of November 12th, 13th and 14th, we look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones,  while sipping on hot apple cider, and delicious Christmas cookies!

Gearing up for our Christmas show line-up!

With the garden center winding down for the season we have been on the move, creating, sourcing materials, visiting wholesale customers, shipping orders,  and trying hard to stay a step ahead of the upcoming shows……not to mention adjusting to our newest member of the family, Shaelee a 5 month old puppy, who tries really hard to be good but is still a very very busy girl………..

I  have added a few new shows this year and are anxious to get on the road and meet new people, see new places and show our work.  Last week we got some exciting news………. we were accepted at the Ottawa Signatures Christmas show at Lansdowne Park!   Tho I’ve never participated in this show before I have heard great things about it! Last spring we attended our first Ottawa Signatures  show, it was a great experience to visit a fantastic city filled with friendly people which helped to make it a successful debut.

I have been working extra hard this fall to produce new and innovative products  with an interesting twist!  If you are curious to what that entails……..well,  you have to come and see for yourself :)    I am constantly trying  to challenge myself to come up with something fresh, something  new that fits into my product line, but still  is creative enough to stand out on its own………. I’m lucky to be blessed with customers that have visited my store or show booth for years,  and love to surprise them with something new, for that hard to buy person, or for that certain corner of their home that has yet to be adorned.

My mom and I have searched far and wide and have come home with a bounty of really great materials. I was fortunate to come onto what I think is some of the nicest hardware and tin that I have had in years, not just in color but texture as well, with layers of paint and beautiful patterns.  I also came across some really detailed archetectural corbels that I have plans for ………….curious?  Well like I said before you just have to come and check it out! However thats not all I have been collecting,  I  have abundance of vintage trim, baseboard and doors, boasting all sorts of colors to use for birdhouses and feeders.

Despite all of the shows that we have planned, it seems we are constantly working towards our Christmas Wishes Open House right here at our store in Kincardine Nov 12th, 13th and 14th.  This open house is special to us since we get to personally invite our customers to our location. My mom and I have taken every chance we have had the last couple of months to plan, search for new and unique products and to  prepare for this event. I’m really blessed to have a mom who is not only very supportive of  these endevours but has a talent for custom Christmas  arrangements, and setting up wonderful displays……………. and  not to mention, lucky for me she is very attention to detail.

Well that is all for now, we are planning to leave at the crack of dawn tomorrow for Ottawa, everything is packed, luggage is loaded and we are on our way!

Hope to see you there!

Ready set go!

So I think we are all set for the Barrie  Kempenfest 2010!  The new products are finished, mostly loaded in trailer now, so all we need is a weekend filled with sunshine and we will be all set!  If you have never been its a must see over 3.5kms of vendors offering handcrafted art!

The past few weeks have been rather hectic with the  summer Bracebridge show, which we were fortunate to have a wonderfully dry weekend, enjoyed by customers and vendors alike.

However, I have been very busy trying to get ready for not only Kempenfest but the CGTA Gift show in Toronto August 8th to 12th.  This show is a little different to get ready for as its wholesale order writing , open to trade only, which makes it a little different to prepare for.  I’m once again very fortunate to have my mom Linda not only help with set up but also with the show itself.  Make no mistake tho, sometimes a little extra help is needed now and then, not to mention a little extra muscle too.   I’ve been very blessed to have the help of good friends who at every One of a Kind show and CGTA show set up the booth construction itself, and to think I met them thro Saltbox business……just one of those instances where business can give gifts of many forms!  I think one of my favorite things that I’ve received thro both businesses is the opportunities to meet really great people, whether they are fellow vendors or customers that have turned into life long  friends!  That’s what makes it all worth while right!

Regardless of where in the province we are doing shows, The Plant Place  is business as usual.  Its a great time to visit the garden center and take advantage of  all the plant  material on sale…. no plants excluded…there are awesome deals to be had!  Our garden center consists of much more then shrubs and plants tho……..we have a truly unique selection of wrought iron, bird houses, cast iron, and home and  garden decor galore……..new pieces arrive weekly!

If you haven’t visited Kincardine before you are in for a treat! The lake shore town offers great food,  the best sunsets and not to mention our famous piped marching band who is joined by 100’s of locals and visitors alike every Saturday night down main street.

Don’t forget to take a moment to check out my new pieces, that have just been introduced to the website product catalogue.

Hopefully see you soon!

Getting ready for summer!

After a successful One of a Kind show and Ottawa show we are  now on our annual Muskoka road trip, visiting all our wholesale customers in the area.   Its a great opportunity to introduce new products, meet new customers and see how wonderful their retail stores are.  Its always nice to see the stores that carry my work  and how they are displayed in person.  However after a couple days in the Muskoka’s its back to work!  There’s  alot of new products designed on paper and now waiting to be made and introduced at the upcoming shows, the next being Windsor Art in the Park in June……great show!

Also on the to do  list is to finalize preparations for The Plant Place, our family owned and operated retail garden center, which also showcases The Saltbox Shoppe, right on home turf!   Very shortly we will be overflowing with hand selected  flowers of every color and description, wrought iron garden art, custom planters and much much more!  We take great pride not only in the quality of our plants but also the daily care they receive from our experienced greenhouse staff.

Its a great time of year, alot of fun, alot of work and alot of great people to meet!  If you have time be sure to drop in for a visit, we will be open mothers day weekend!

Cya soon!
